These qualifications have been especially designed for care workers in the full range of care settings in the public, private or voluntary services. Based on the most up to date practice, they make it easier both to develop your range of skills as you progress in your career and also move between different services and settings. In all agencies delivering health and social care services to adults or to children and young people, NVQ’s are the essential qualification for care workers.

Level 2

Is for staff who deliver physical, emotional or enabling care to clients, whether they work in health or social care, in the public private or voluntary sectors.

Level 3

As for level 2 but you may also be dealing with clients who have a medium to high degree of dependency. There are 2 routes for this award one for those who work with children and the second for those who work with adults.

Level 4

This award focuses on development of services, organisational policy, joint working with other agencies, management skills and the improvement of the candidate’s own knowledge, skills and practice.

Candidates must be working as managers or supervisors and able to provide evidence for all units within the award. They will, therefore, have a degree of responsibility and autonomy. There are two routes to this award - one for those who work with children and the other for those who work with adults.

How are they assessed?

You will be assessed in your workplace where your assessor will meet with you to identify your skills and knowledge. Together you will plan your way through the award. All observations take place in the work place and are written by your assessor who is also responsible for all recording. You will be given feedback on your progress throughout your award.

How long will it take?

This is down to you and the assessment opportunities in your workplace. The minimum length of time for completion is 10 weeks, but generally most level 2 candidates complete within 6 months, level 3 and 4 within 6 – 12 months.
